Synopsis:

No day is ordinary in a world where Technology and Magic compete for supremacy…But no matter which force is winning, in the apocalypse, a sword will always work.

Hugh d’Ambray, Preceptor of the Iron Dogs, Warlord of the Builder of Towers, served only one man. Now his immortal, nearly omnipotent master has cast him aside. Hugh is a shadow of the warrior he was, but when he learns that the Iron Dogs, soldiers who would follow him anywhere, are being hunted down and murdered, he must make a choice: to fade away or to be the leader he was born to be. Hugh knows he must carve a new place for himself and his people, but they have no money, no shelter, and no food, and the necromancers are coming. Fast.

Elara Harper is a creature who should not exist. Her enemies call her Abomination; her people call her White Lady. Tasked with their protection, she’s trapped between the magical heavyweights about to collide and plunge the state of Kentucky into a war that humans have no power to stop. Desperate to shield her people and their simple way of life, she would accept help from the devil himself—and Hugh d’Ambray might qualify.

Hugh needs a base, Elara needs soldiers. Both are infamous for betraying their allies, so how can they create a believable alliance to meet the challenge of their enemies?

As the prophet says: “It is better to marry than to burn.”

Hugh and Elara may do both.

Banner Iron and Magic

Oh boy, only Ilona Andrews could make me root for a villain that I passionately wanted Curran and Kate to destroy in the Kate Daniels series. As a spinoff of Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniels series, Iron and Magic is the “where is he now?” story for Hugh d’Ambray, one of their worst enemies. And now, here I am sitting at the sidelines rooting for his redemption arc to unfold. He’s murdered, captured, and tortured some of my most beloved characters, but after reading Iron and Magic, I am now ALL IN for Hugh being free of Roland’s rule and Hugh creating a new life with a kickass witch named Elara.

Set up as a marriage of convenience book, Hugh and Elara do not get along. At the beginning, their chemistry is a small flickering flame fueled by loathing and angst, but by the end of the book, their flame ignites. And I am looking forward to seeing how their relationship develops throughout the series.

In Iron and Magic, Hugh often comes off as a self-adsorbed badass, but throughout the novel, he starts wearing his heart on his sleeve, portraying acts of kindness and protecting those who are unable to protect themselves. His faithful counterpart, Elara, lives by the rules but she also wants to protect her people at any cost. I love that she stands up to Hugh all the time throughout the novel. But as they are butting heads, they also start compromising and working together. Overall, I am so glad Ilona Andrews is writing this spinoff series, because I am already addicted and need more.

I loved Julie Murphy’s last book, Dumplin’, and I have been so antsy to start this book. So glad it’s out and it’s now in my hands.

If you love fandoms and geeking out, I highly recommend Internet Famous. It’s a fun, quick read with a cute, swoony relationship.

I was not a fan of Love and Gelato, but I did love all the Italy landmarks that were explored in the story. The book also increased my craving for Gelato by one-million percent 🙂

22303684

GAH! If you are a fan of Ilona Andrews’ past series then you need this book in your life. If you love the slow burn of a love/hate relationship with a strong, badass heroine and a cocky, mouthy male counterpart then YOU NEED THIS BOOK IN YOUR LIFE. White Hot is perfection and one of the best urban fantasy books I have read in a long time.

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’LL READ NEXT?

I have never read a Cora Carmack book before, so I am so excited to jump into ROAR. I’m in the mood for a good fantasy novel, and I think this book is the right choice.

This week’s topic is…

Top Ten Books that Get Me Out of Reading Slumps

(Click on the book cover to be linked to its Goodreads page or my review)

6479550

The Kate Daniels series is my favorite urban fantasy series, and book 4, Magic Bleeds, is my favorite book out of the series so far. I love Kate Daniels–she is so badass and fierce. And the sassy, snarky, and sarcastic dialogue between her and Curran always makes my day.

21853666

I found Happiness for Beginners by accident last year, and I loved it. I love it so much that I have turned to it two times for a reading slump cure.  I love how Helen pushes herself throughout the book, and I especially enjoyed the dynamics between Helen and Jake.

18189606

I’ve lost count of how many times I have read Since You’ve Been Gone. As an introvert and an people-observer, Emily reminds me of me when I was her age. I never had a Frank, but I’m so glad she found him in the book.

18741152

This is my classy, swoony book that I turned to ALL the time, because it’s a cheesy, quick, and light-hearted read.

17756559

I can never get enough of Kestrel and Arin, so whenever a reading slump hits, I want to be in their world and in their heads, because they are perfect for each other.

16068905

This is one of those books I wish I had when I was in high school/early college. It’s a quick and genuinely cute book to fall in love with over and over.

18304322

I feel like Dumplin’ is one of those books that changed my perspective of the “typical” girl found in young adult books. Willowdean is a memorable character that I wish I could meet in person. I wish they would make this book into a movie!

71811

The Mercy Thompson series is another urban fantasy series that I LOVE SO MUCH. I could reread this series over and over, and still want more.

22429350

The Start of Me and You is my favorite Emery Lord book (so far). It touches base on losing someone, starting new friendships, first loves, anxiety, and fandoms. It is a cute and quick read that always cures my reading slumps.

23281781

Brighton Walsh is one of my favorite New Adult writers, and Tessa Ever After was the first book I read by her. It’s realistic and sexy and funny as hell. Definitely a great book that has gotten me out of a few reading slumps.

17333174I love this series, and I hate that I devour the newest releases in less than a day, because afterwards, I always want more Kate and Curran.

To keep up with Fall reads, I am going to reread Practical Magic and then a rewatch of the movie soon.

Books You Want to See as TV Shows

38619

All hail the writers, husband and wife behind Ilona Andrews, who have created the most innovative, heart-pounding, swoonworthy, kiss-ass heroine series. The Kate Daniels series needs to be a TV show RIGHT NOW! READ IT, PEOPLE! YOU WILL LOVE IT, AND WITH EVERY BOOK YOU WILL WANT MORE OF KATE AND CURRAN.

17756559

I cannot rave enough about this series. It is perfection at its finest. The writing is magnificent, the characters jump right off the page, and the story is so heart-wrenching and wonderful. This needs to be a TV series or at least a movie ASAP!

22718701

I want a Steampunk TV show on air NOW, and I think this series would be a great way to go about that dream.

6564856

About five years ago, I was obsessed with this book series. Because of the humor and quirkiness in this series, it is definitely TV worthy.

11852

I would love to see this book unfold into a TV show, and hopefully see how Kit and Nat live after Speare’s final chapters.

Books You Want to Read Before the End of the Year

25739107

I’ve heard people raving about this book, but I’ve also heard that this book made people cry. I want to read this book, but I also don’t want to cry. See I’m in a conundrum here. Hopefully, before the end of the year, I’m in a mindset that has prepared me to read The Serpent King

28962906

Stalking Jack the Ripper has been on my radar for quite a while, and I have been lucky to be invited to be part of the book’s blog tour. I cannot wait to read this one soon!

17333174

I love Ilona Andrews’ Kate Daniel series. Whenever a new Kate Daniels book shows up, I buy it, read it in one day, and then patiently wait for the next book in the series. If you love urban fantasy, a sassy and strong heroine, and awesome banter between two crazy-about-each-other-characters, definitely pick up this series.

28220887

Kristen Simmons is one of my favorite authors in the YA community. I cannot wait to read her new book, Metaltown, and rave about how awesome she is some more. Plus this cover is artistically BEAUTIFUL.

27284765

HOLY MOTHER OF BOOKS, DAT COVER! I am a cover fanatic, and yes, I will buy a book based off its cover, even if I do not know the synopsis. But I’ve read this synopsis of this book, and it just makes me want to read it even more. The synopsis had me at, “Thrust into the glamour of Victorian London…” GIMME! GIMME! GIMME!

What books do you hope to read before the end of the year?
