HOSTED by The Broke and the Bookish
This week’s topic is…
Top Ten Things On Our Reading Wishlist
- Jane Eyre retellings. Because it’s my all-time favorite book and I think there should be more retellings of it.
- Young Adult books set in the 1980s. I’ve been rewatching The Carrie Diaries on Netflix, and I just love this series from the characters to the clothing to the music (and everything that screams 1980s!)
- Books about bookish people. I love reading about characters that are in love with books as much as I am. BOOK LOVE should definitely be promoted more.
- Books set in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky. The Cincinnati tri-state is my home, and I would love to see more books take place in this setting.
- Young Adult characters starting college. College is a huge life transition for young adults and I hate that it’s rarely written about in the young adult genre.
- More books written by Erin Morgenstern. I adored The Night Circus and I’ve been patiently waiting for more words and worlds to be written by Morgenstern for a very long time!
- More enemies to lovers/friends. I don’t know what it is about this trope, but I always want to read more of it.
- More Young Adult magical realism books. In the last few years, magical realism has been my favorite genre to read, and I wouldn’t mind seeing more of this genre pop up throughout the next few years.
- Victorian Period romances. The Victorian period is my favorite era to study and read, so of course I want more swoony books to take place in this setting.
- More standalones or duologies. I like trilogies, but sometimes when a series is 4, 5, or even 8 books long…it’s just ridiculous.
Be still my heart! The 80s are amongst one of my favorite time periods. I was a teen then, so I didn’t enjoy it as much when I was actually living it, but looking back, there was tons to adore. The fashion was somewhat unfortunate and my hair *shudder*, but the music was incredible and a lot of huge things happened during that time period.

Hahaha, my older sister grew up in the 80s and we still talk about her hair. I love the 80s, especially the music and movies, so some books set in this decade would be amazing.
Instead of books about bookish people, I wrote books about non-bookish people who actively hate literature and the arts! This is a really good list though!
Thank you! Reading a book about non-bookish people would be a very interesting read. I never thought of that idea.
Yes to more duologies and college stories. Also would love some 80’s stories. 🙂
And maybe possible 1980s college stories! 🙂
YES!! We need to get this thing going.
I would LOVE more good Jane Eyre retellings and more Victorian Period everything! Amazing!
YES! VICTORIAN EVERYTHING, PLEASE!!!
Victorian eras? YES! I’d like that – but I’m also a 1920s fan. 🙂 Books about bookish people (or bloggers!) is 100% a must! Authors, take note. Fun list!
Hahaha…thank you! Yes, authors, please take note 🙂
Yes! I agree with so many of these. Especially 2 and 10. I just read a standalone set in the 80s, so power to that! I just love the fashion and the movies and the references. So fun.
Oh, what book did you read set in the 1980s? I’m always looking for recommendations.
It’s called The Impossible Fortress. It was a bit mature, I think, to be considered middle grade, but the main character is a little younger than typical YA. I believe he’s fourteen, if I remember correctly. But there’s lots of 80s nerd culture, so I really enjoyed it. (:
Oh, cool. I’m off to Goodreads to check it out. Thank you for the recommendation.
I haven’t read Jane Eyre (yet) but I’ve seen a lot of people who have been talking about Jane Eyre retellings recently! And I 100% agree with the enemies to lovers trope that one is my all time favourite!!!
I think it’s the “frustration” aspect that makes me love the enemies to lovers trope; it brings great banter and passion between the characters, which I love.
Oh yes, you’re so right! I absolutely love that 😍
Yes to all this. 🤘
I would definitely love to read more of #5!

YAY!!! So glad there are many other people who think there should be more YA books about college. 🙂
It’s still a part of the YA experience, admittedly for those at the older end, so we definitely should see it more.
Hi! Well, I can’t help but suggest a book full of the 80s and with a character from Cincinnati!…Chasing Eveline (my book). Sorry, I just couldn’t resist lol it just fit too well. Books with bookish characters- have you read the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde? Not YA, but it’s like a literary Nancy Drew. So cool. Great list this week. 🙂

Oh, searching for you book right after this. And I loved Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series. I haven’t read it in a while, so I might to another reread soon 🙂
I’d like more YA 80’s books too, I haven’t seen the Carrie Diaries but after seeing Stranger things recently I’d like more of that era. Books about college and bookish people are also good ones. Nice list!
Thank you for stopping by and commenting. The Carrie Diaries has a lot of 80s vibes, so definitely give it a try.
As an Ohioan, I’d love to see more books set in this are, too! 🙂

YAY! I get overly excited when I see books taking place in Ohio and Kentucky 🙂
